A Party Ain't Party...

unless you were celebrating the birth of me and my girl Summer on Saturday night. My apartment was quite appropriately transformed into that revered "basement" of the late 198os and 1990s. All of the furniture (which ain't much) was pushed to the side, leaving just enough space for people to crowd in, not caring about the spacial limitations because that night...it was all about the music!

We took it back to about 1987 and brought it forward to about 1998. Major shout out to Safire and her man DefNative for taking the time to make the mix cds, when y'all could have been enjoying each other's company. Another major shout out to Boogottisgirl, for coming all the way from LA to celebrate. Good lookin out on that door situation!

With the lights down low and the snacks and drinks off to the side, our make shift stereo equipment and carefully chosen playlists sent everyone's adrenaline into overdrive. It was at our party, that I fell in love all over again with the melodic sounds of A Tribe Called Quest, Camp Lo, Bahamadia, Common and more. I rediscovered a few long lost favorites like Pharcyde, Brand Nubian and Goodie Mob. I was amazed by how nostalgic I felt. I wanted to be that 7 year old again, sitting on her front porch with a small boombox listening to Roxanne Shante, Dougie Fresh, Slick Rick, wishing I too could be apart of the movement; not realizing that even then I already was.

Amidst my looming fear that noone would show up and the mini-dramas that ensued because about 40 more people than I ever expected did show up, I managed to be co-host, fall in love and have a thoroughly good time. Not only do I owe that to the essence of hip hop, but to the amazing people who came out and celebrated, showed love and allowed the atmosphere to soak them in.

I mean...it was good music, good food, great drinks and wonderful company! What more could you really ask for?

Shout out to my dad for the amazing pan of rice and beans and jerk chicken! I love ya, old man!!
